Well, this isn't really a book chapter, but a somewhat lengthy abstract of my PhD thesis (in German).
Lucky outcome of a paper submitted to the 2nd Annual Computing Surveys Student Tutorial Paper Contest. The submitted version is available as a Technical Report. Read abstract. BibTeX entry.
Lays the ground for the transformational work I originally planned to do in my thesis. Available as online in various formats, BibTeX entry.
Available: BibTeX entry. Preliminary form available as Technical Report.
This was a highly polished short version of the ideas from my diploma thesis. Available as: Postscript, BibTeX entry.
This is an early ``work-in-progress'' version of another paper.
Available as: Gnuzipped Postscript, BibTeX
entry.
This is only the abstract of my talk on the same topic.
A pretty easy going formal paper describing specification transformations from a high level view and using the problem of consensus under the crash fault assumption as an example. Available as: Gnuzipped Postscript, Slides as Gnuzipped Postscript, BibTeX entry.
A talk which tried to approach a solution to a problem formulated in an earlier paper presented in Durban, S.A.. Abstract available as: Gnuzipped Postscript, BibTeX entry.
First presentation of ideas from an earlier paper presented in Durban, S.A. to the self-stabilization community. Available as: Gnuzipped Postscript, BibTeX entry.
This is the development of an idea from my
diploma thesis, but unfortunately
concurrently different solutions were described in a
paper at
ICDCS'99. This paper might nevertheless be interesting because
it applies the compositional self-stabilization methodology in
a standard fashion (at the end of the 20th centrury).
Available as: Gnuzipped Postscript,
BibTeX entry.
A somewhat invited presentation (here are the slides). Available as: Gnuzipped Postscript, BibTeX entry.
A short statement about my PhD thesis. This text came to be because GI and Konradin Verlag were organizing a recruitment event at the old monastery of Bad Schussenried. It was a great event.
Preliminary form
available as Technical Report. Available: BibTeX
entry.
Available as: Gnuzipped Postscript.
A generalization of the modalities possibly and definitely to
faulty systems.
Available as: Gnuzipped Postscript,
talk slides (PDF),
BibTeX
entry.
Available as: Gnuzipped PS file. Extended version appears as an IBM Research report.
Available as from Library of the
University of Lisbon. See also talk slides.

This was written as my personal manifesto and incorporated all the broad reading I was doing during the early months of 1998. Winner of the 2nd Annual Computing Surveys Student Tutorial Paper Contest; a slightly revised version appears in ACM Computing Surveys. Read abstract. Available as: Postscript, BibTeX entry.
Some first ideas concerning fault modelling: prerequisites for my further work. Got rejected at ICDCS 1999. Read abstract. Available as: Gnuzipped Postscript. BibTeX entry.
A case study in how to derive degraded specifications given a high-level failure model. A shorter version appears in the proceedings of ERSADS'99. Read abstract. Available as: Gnuzipped Postscript. BibTeX entry.

Here is the official version of my PhD thesis published by our university electronically. It's in German, but on page 5 there's an abstract written in English. Part of the thesis has been published at conferences or in journals already.
This is my diploma thesis, a real fun-to-write thing that combined all the nice areas of interest: distributed algorithms, fault tolerance and replication. I assume that this text is the first broad introduction to self-stabilization in German?!
You can read the abstract in German, or read it in English. There's also a ``thesis homepage'' in German or English with some funny Java animations to play around with. See also the 2-page version published as a FastAbstract at FTCS-28. Available as: Gnuzipped Postscript (see also Errata), BibTeX entry.
This talk describes results of my diploma thesis with a strong emphasis on fault tolerance in weak consistency replication. It was fun to present this talk, because the audience was very encouraging and the discussion was interesting. Slides available as: Gnuzipped Postscript. Handout available as: Gnuzipped Postscript.
This was the ``final'' talk on my diploma thesis with emphasis on self-stabilization and methodologies to build self-stabilizing algorithms. Slides available as: Gnuzipped Postscript. Handout available as: Gnuzipped Postscript.
This has been (and probably will be) the shortest talk I ever will hold anywhere. It was a two-slide-four-minute rush through a few ideas during a strenuous FastAbstracts session. See also the paper version of this talk. Slides available as: Gnuzipped Postscript.
This talk was meant to review the position of self-stabilization within the broad field of fault tolerance. There were no actual results to report, only some preliminary ideas on the potential of self-stabilization for reliable computing. Read abstract (which was published in the Seminar Report). Slides available as: Gnuzipped Postscript (you need to ``swap landscape'' in Ghostview to see them the right way up).

A first attempt to relate the problems of fair exchange and consensus. Rejected at DISC 1999 because of overseen related work. Ideas appear in a later Computer Journal paper. Read abstract. Available as: Gnuzipped Postscript. BibTeX entry.

One-page musing on proofs in mathematical or computer science papers. The time I wrote this I was reading about one proof a day, and sometimes it isn't quite clear whether the authors are quite serious in their writing. So this short column isn't as ironic as it might feel at first sight. A briefly revised version is available as: Gnuzipped Postscript.
Seminar im Sommersemester 1999, gehalten als kleine Konferenz. Tagungsband online.
A small story which I wrote during the end of 1997, which describes the quality of undergraduate studies at a hypothetical German university. It was meant to be funny, but I'm afraid that many people took it seriously. Maybe the topic isn't as easy as I thought. Available as: Gnuzipped Postscript, DBLP reference entry.

Slides available as: Gnuzipped Postscript (you need to ``swap landscape'' in Ghostview to see them the right way up).
